Engineering your career with NSC
Engineers are behind the technology that we use every day – from your mobile phone, the family car, to your toothpaste!
Simply put, engineers use science, technology and math to solve problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet our business and society’s needs.
Engineering is an occupation with an extremely wide reach. The term ‘engineering’ covers many fields. In the naval shipbuilding industry there’s going to be a huge demand in the coming years for engineers specialising in:
- Software Engineers
- Mechanical Engineers
- Electrical Engineers
- Electronic Engineers
- Naval Architects

Who is suited to being an engineer?
Engineers are scientists, inventors, designers, builders and great thinkers. They are curious, they like to understand how things work. Engineers are often methodical, rational, analytical and logical, and enjoy science, maths, creativity and teamwork.
Depending on what you’re interested in, that will determine what type of engineering you might like to specialise in.
For example, a software engineer might enjoy:
- Coding – Coding is a part of our everyday life – it sits behind the apps on our phones, the games we play with our friends and everything we do on the Internet.
- Languages – Coding is just another language – a language that software engineers and computers understand!
- Gaming – Imagine being paid to design games! Augmented and virtual realities are a massive part of modern shipbuilding and software engineers use their skills to build virtual reality environments to train staff or test equipment.
- Robotics – Robots and automation are increasingly common in the workplace. These technologies require someone to design and program them, and that’s the job of a software engineer!
Where can I work as an engineer?
Many engineers in the shipbuilding industry spend their time working in an office environment or out in the shipyard overseeing their projects.
All of the major companies in Australia’s Naval Shipbuilding Industry (such as BAE Systems Maritime Australia, Naval Group Australia and ASC) will be in need of engineers to work on the design, build and maintenance of ships and submarines. There’s also work available for engineers in the smaller companies which supply work and parts for these projects.
