Encompassing iconic Australian retailers Spotlight, Anaconda, Harris Scarfe, and Mountain Designs, Spotlight Retail Group (SRG) is one of A/NZ’s largest and fastest-growing retail operations.
Founded in 1973, brothers Morry Fraid and Ruben Fried bought with them a business philosophy formed from years of supporting their parent’s business at the Queen Victoria Market, an approach that has been incorporated into every aspect of the business. From humble beginnings the group has bought a market-challenging owner’s mindset to the retail scene, becoming a major player in the Australasian marketplace.
SRG operates a shared services model with the Melbourne-headquartered group supporting the retail brands in finance, IT, supply chain, marketing, human resources and payroll. One of the critical elements that binds SRG’s brands together is a shared set of values: People, Success & Excellence. These values are underpinned by best-in-class team and product training programs, ‘Talk Back to the Boss’ open communication policies, and a long history of putting community values and engagement first, supported by the Spotlight Foundation.

Spotlight
Spotlight has grown from a single, family-run market stall, to become one of Australasia’s leading retail chains.
Operating in four countries, Spotlight is acknowledged as a market leader in fabrics, craft and homewares. We offer our customers hundreds of brands and thousands of products at the lowest prices. Millions of customers each year shop at Spotlight, both in-store and online, and our VIP loyalty program is one of Australia’s largest.
Spotlight’s founders Ruben Fried and Morry Fraid learned about fabrics by working at their family’s stall at Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market in the early 1970s. A powerful work ethic and keen business sense led them to open their first Spotlight store in Malvern in 1973. Today, in addition to our extensive store network in Australia, Spotlight owns and operates outlets in New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia, and employs about 6,000 Team Members.

Anaconda
In 2004, the Group launched Anaconda its second and now iconic retail brand. Anaconda was launched with a vision to be Australia’s leading outdoor adventure and sports super store, leveraging the deep ‘big box’ retailing capabilities developed over the decades of Spotlight’s successful growth. The Anaconda brand is a network of 60 stores strong with a presence in all Australian states, and continues to grow rapidly.
The group acquired iconic Australian outdoor and adventure brand Mountain Designs in 2018. Founded in 1975 by mountaineer Rick White, Mountain Designs has long provided superior and innovative goods to adventurers across the globe. With real credibility, a passion for quality product and a focus on the best gear for the Australian market, the Mountain Designs brand is a cornerstone of the outdoors industry. Harris Scarfe
With 175+ years of service to Australians, Harris Scarfe boasts more than 55 stores and over 1500 valued team members. As a leader in homewares, manchester, and fashion, we pride ourselves on quality product at exceptional prices with great customer service. Under the ownership of The Spotlight Retail Group, our teams have access to all the benefits of being one of Australia’s most well-known and operated retail collectives.
Other
In parallel with (and facilitating) the growth of the retail store network, the Group has acquired and developed a substantial retail and commercial property portfolio, across Australia and New Zealand. It is a landlord to over 300 tenants, as well as housing a significant number of Spotlight and Anaconda stores themselves. In more recent years, Spotlight Group has continued to diversify its interests, through the Group’s ownership stakes in a variety of other operating businesses, the development of a diversified investment portfolio including an active and fast growing property finance business, (managed under the Alara brand), and the Spotlight Foundation, which seeks to make grants and donations to a range of worthy causes each year.

In Store Careers
Having a knowledgeable In-Store Team that is passionate about our product range, and committed to quality service, has always been key to Spotlight’s success. Our rewarding In-Store roles range from Service Team Members to Department Team Leaders, Made to Measure Consultants, Receiving and Reset Specialists and Store Managers. These In-Store roles require Team Members with great people skills who are focused on meeting, or exceeding, their store targets and improving the customer experience.
Service Team Member
Our Service Team Members are the public face of our business, interacting with customers and providing quality service and expertise. It’s a physical role where you are on your feet most of the day, balancing service with other tasks to ensure our products are well presented on the shelves and that in-store based promotions are carried out accurately. We are looking for people who have initiative, drive, great people skills and the ability to balance competing demands.
Receiving and Resett
Our Receiving and Resett Team is responsible for taking delivery of product and moving it efficiently from the truck to the shelf. It is these Team Members who maintain accurate records of delivered goods, ensuring product reaches the floor.
We are looking for people with exceptional organisational skills and attention to detail. They need to be great communicators and have the ability to deliver quality outcomes when faced with competing demands.
Made to Measure Consultant (Spotlight Only)
Spotlight Made to Measure Consultants assist customers to choose the best window furnishing solution to meet their needs. Working in-store and on-site in customer’s homes, our Consultants need to have strong sales experience, coupled with great people skills and an eye for design. You’ll need a current driver’s licence and to be able to work independently to be successful in this role.
Department Team Leader
Department Team Leaders (DTLs) manage the sales strategies, operational needs and day-to-day activities of their specific product department. DTLs are mainly based on the shop floor and need to be capable of dealing with the challenging issues that frequently arise around customer service and product. They also need to provide their Team with inspiration and leadership.
Support Group Careers
Operating a business with more than 150 stores and two iconic brands over four countries requires a Support Group staffed by Team Members who are passionate about Buying, Planning, Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Property and IT.
We are looking for people with an entrepreneurial mindset who relish a challenge and are committed to continuous improvement.
Merchandise (Buying and Planning)
Our Merchandise Team ensures our brands are able to continue to deliver on their customer promise. Our Buyers keep our range on trend and source product and our Business Planners and Allocators analyse, forecast and place stock.
Marketing
Utilising our in-house Advertising Team, Communications Team and Marketing Team, the Marketing Department successfully promotes the brands throughout Australia. Creative roles include Graphic Design, Photography and Post Production, as well as Public Relations and Communications.
Retail Operations
The Retail Operations Team ensures our front-line team have the tools, skills, knowledge and support they need to provide the high-quality sales and service our customers expect. Our Regional Managers are responsible for providing leadership to up to 14 multi-million dollar outlets each, to ensure the stores reach their full potential.
E-Commerce and Master Data
Our E-Commerce Team is responsible for our distinctive web presence, providing our customers with the ability to access our VIP offers online all day, every day, whilst still experiencing our excellent customer service on our websites. Our Master Data Team keeps accurate records of our product data.
Property & Store Development
The busy Property & Store Development Team is responsible for our multi-million dollar property portfolio and the facilities management of nearly 200 stores in our Spotlight, Anaconda and Harris Scarfe store network. The Team manages the design, construction and fit out of our new stores as well as relocations, renovations and extensions – across four countries.
Information Technology
The Information Technology Team provides quality systems that assist, simplify and improve our business processes to enable us to meet our key outcomes. The IT Team aims to control costs, deliver quality services and develop and improve systems to support our business needs.
Finance
The Finance Team provides the overall commercial oversight for the business to keep on track with our operational and strategic goals. The Team is constantly striving for improvement within its key portfolios of financial and management reporting, accounts, payroll, statutory compliance, risk management and stock integrity.
Human Resources
People strategy is attraction and retention, talent and succession, leadership development, health and safety. Our Human Resources Team works with Leaders throughout the business to design and implement the systems, processes and tools that bring that strategy to life.
Distribution Centre Careers
Spotlight Retail Group’s Distribution Centres have the challenging task of ensuring our rapidly growing store network is continuously and efficiently supplied with the right product at the right time. The roles are varied – from Inventory Stock Flow Planner to Warehouse Operator, Leading Hand and Team Leader, through to the Help Desk – but they all require Team Members who are organised, pay attention to detail and thrive on meeting exacting deadlines.
Help Desk
Our Distribution Centre Help Desk is the first point of call for stores experiencing supply chain issues. A DC Team Member needs to be a natural at problem-solving, providing advice and balancing competing, and urgent, needs.
Warehouse Operator
Our Warehouse Operators ensure the accuracy, safety and efficiency of product deliveries to our large store network. It’s a fast paced role that requires people who are capable of performing physically all day, who have good literacy and numerical skills and love working in a Team to meet challenging deadlines and targets.
Leading Hand
Our Leading Hands manage up to 30 Team Members, providing supervision and leadership to our Warehouse Operators. They also perform hands-on duties in our Distribution Centre, coordinating stocktake, cyclical counts and administrative and reporting tasks. It’s a role that requires great people skills and the ability to work with limited supervision.
Team Leader
Team Leaders in our Distribution Centre are responsible for overseeing all warehouse activities, from receiving goods to rostering and training Team Members. They ensure a safe work environment and foster a productive and harmonious Team culture. Team Leaders must perform at a high level in challenging circumstances, exercise superior organisational skills, and be self-motivated in seeking ways to continuously improve their own performance and that of their Team.
Stock Flow / Inventory Planner
Stock Flow / Inventory Planners plan the movement of product across the Spotlight Retail Group’s Distribution Centre and Supply Chain Network. It’s a varied and challenging role, and prior logistics experience is a must. Planners have to be highly organised, calm under pressure, results-driven and be able to communicate effectively with people at all levels of the company.

Festive Bonus
Each year in December, Spotlight Retail Group pays current permanent Team Members a Festive Bonus (eligibility timing applies). The bonus is based on the net margin achieved by the company for the past financial year, and the amount paid is a proportion of the Team Member’s average weekly pay!
