Meet Chris

Technical intern – Consulting

What is your role, and what does it entail?

I am a technical consulting Intern. I spend a lot of my time at client offices working on the implementation of SAS solutions and systems for our clients.

What does a typical day look like for you? Or is every day different?

Most weeks I have a fixed schedule, I live very close to the SAS office in Lane Cove, so I almost never work from home. I don’t have too many meetings to attend on any given day and spend most of my time working on implementing and updating SAS solutions for clients.

How did you come into this role? Talk to us about your education and career journey/highlights to this point.

I reached out to a contact at SAS while studying at university and managed to secure a 4-week internship with them. While at that internship my manager alerted me to a longer internship program that was set to run after the uni year was finished. I did an interview with her and secured the longer internship excited to be back in just a few months.

Why did your organisation stand out to you?

SAS are a market leader in data and analytics and all throughout my degree I wanted to work for them, so this is really a dream come true for me. They are also known for their employee wellbeing focused mindset and treat their staff very well which made them a very attractive choice.

What do you love most about working at your organisation?

While I love the types of work I get to do every day, the thing I am most fond of at SAS is the people who I get to work with. We sit around the lunch table and chat, have drinks in the office on Friday afternoons do jigsaw puzzles and crosswords and just genuinely connect with one another in a way that makes it a joy to come into work.

What type of skills and personal attributes is your organisation looking to employ? What is going to make someone stand out from the crowd?

While experience with SAS software is appreciated it is a willingness to learn and change with this rapidly advancing field that is what SAS is looking for most of all. SAS solutions and platforms are changing every day and an ability to learn and keep up with change will allow you to be very successful as SAS.

What do you like to get up to outside of work? Does your organisation allow you to maintain a healthy work/life balance?

I play trivia twice a week with friends, I read excessively (sci-fi, fantasy) and I love my dog. SAS is great at allowing for flexibility in your work life and that just makes it so much easier to have a healthy life away from work. If you need to you can work flexible hours and work from home is fully supported.

What does a typical day look like?

7:30am

I wake up in the morning, have a shower, and take the dog for a walk.

8.15 AM

Once I am back form walking the dog I have a short walk to the office, being so close to the SAS office in Lane Cove really helps my work life balance as I avoid a long commute to work.

8.30 AM

When I get into the office I have breakfast in the hub, nothing too exciting just vegemite toast and juice. It is looking quite quiet in the office today, lots of people still choose to work from home, especially on Fridays.

9.00 AM

I start the day, check emails send off some replies and plan the day ahead.

9.30 AM

Time for the weekly stand up for the current project with Westpac. I sit in at the meeting while the team discusses progress, blockers, and expected timelines with the client and how they are going to prioritise the weeks activities.

10.00 AM

I settle in at my desk to write some unit tests and do some testing on the system before the team meeting this afternoon.

12.00 PM

Time for lunch and I sit at the table in the main hub doing the jigsaw puzzle and helping Gurt and Nick with their daily crossword. Very exciting, today we finished the Jigsaw, and we already have the next one lined up for Monday. On Fridays the lolly Jar comes out for anyone who decides to come to the office as a fun incentive.

1.00 PM

After lunch I work on writing some reports using Visual Analytics to assist a colleague in presales who is getting ready to give a demo to a client on the capabilities of SAS Viya.

4.00 PM

Time for the internal meeting for the SAS consultants at Westpac. This meeting is pretty laid back and we spend time going over our tickets in Jira and when we expect each task will be done to make sure we are on track for our system go-live in 2 weeks.

5.00 PM

I join a few others and we chat as we leave the office, I walk down the hill home excited to see my dog and thinking what I am going to have for dinner.

6.30 PM

After having had a play with the dog and a rest reading a book it is time to make dinner, and on the menu tonight is spaghetti bolognaise.

10.00 PM

After dinner I relax for a few more hours tidy up the kitchen and get back to reading until I start to doze off and decide it is time for bed, ready for the weekend.

Meet Janhav

Technical Intern – Consulting

What is your role, and what does it entail?

As a technical intern for consulting, my role is to assist other consultants in completing small but tedious tasks so they can focus on more important projects. To accomplish this, I often must complete learning modules to acquire the necessary skills for these tasks. It’s a challenging role that requires me to be proactive, adaptable, and willing to learn new things.

What does a typical day look like for you? Or is every day different?

A typical day for me is never the same. I usually start by planning out what learning I need to complete for the day, but I’m always ready to lend a hand if someone needs help. I must be flexible and open to change as priorities can shift throughout the day.

How did you come into this role? Talk to us about your education and career
journey/highlights to this point.

I came into this role after completing a degree in Computer Science with a double major in Statistics and a conjoint in Finance at the University of Auckland. I stumbled upon the role while searching for opportunities on Seek and was attracted to SAS because of their reputation for treating their employees well.

Why did your organisation stand out to you?

What sets SAS apart for me is its commitment to their employees’ well-being. They understand that everyone works differently and accommodate those differences by allowing employees to work from home or the office. This flexibility helps to create a productive and supportive work environment where everyone feels appreciated and motivated.

What do you love most about working at your organisation?

The people are why I love most about working at SAS. The staff are supportive, welcoming, and create a positive and healthy work environment.

When it comes to hiring new employees, I believe SAS looks for motivated individuals who are willing to learn new skills.

What do you like to get up to outside of work? Does your organisation allow you to maintain a healthy work/life balance?

Outside of work, I enjoy playing tennis. SAS allows for a healthy work-life balance, which means I can take time out of my workday to pursue my hobbies and interests as long as I make up the time later in the day. This balance helps me to maintain a healthy and happy lifestyle both in and out of work.

Seeing means saving when you help us train AI models to detect deforestation. You can make a difference by seeing what technology can’t.

Our AI platform is already analyzing and making sense of thousands of satellite images that show the magnitude of damage in the rainforests. But artificial intelligence can’t do it alone. We need your help to identify signs of deforestation that the model hasn’t learned to detect. Your participation – whether you identify deforestation in just one or 100 images – will allow us to fine-tune AI models that can detect change in the Amazon and alert conservation and government organizations responsible for protecting it.

The SAS Sales Academy starts with a similar intensive training program based in the SAS head office in North Carolina, America. The academy training includes all you need to know about how to sell SAS software and solutions, including business case development and social selling. 

The SAS Technical Enablement Academy also starts with an intensive training program based in the SAS head office in North Carolina, America. The academy training covers extensive and in-depth technical knowledge of SAS software.
