Livestock Career Development Program

The Nutrien Ag Solutions Livestock Trainee Program has been carefully designed to inspire, educate and support the next generation of livestock sales leaders. Our Livestock Trainee Program attracts the brightest minds to a career in agriculture.
Working with our experienced livestock teams, our Livestock Trainees will be based in regional locations across QLD, NSW, VIC, SA and WA.

About the program

Our Livestock Trainee Program is an entry level start into the business and offers successful candidates the chance to gain valuable experience in all aspects of the livestock activity while completing an in-house Certificate in Livestock Marketing training program.

Over a period of 24 months this program provides hands-on training to our next-gen livestock sales agents, enabling them to deliver value to our livestock producers. You will be provided with tools, training and mentors to enable you to transition into livestock sales roles with a career that can take you into management.

You will be a part of our rural teams, working and learning on the job. You will be attend involved in four leadership and skill-building workshops, complete e-learning requirements and attend industry training programs.

What participants will learn

Business skills – compliance, sales and client relationship building, communication, marketing and social media, understanding finance, problem solving and negotiation and leading and managing a team.

Livestock skills – next generation stock and station agency skills, livestock productivity, animal health and nutrition, Auctions Plus, auctioneering, wool technical and market requirements and emerging technology.

Nutrien business products – rural supplies, wool, real estate, water, insurance and finance.

  • Completion of Year 12

Meet our Livestock Agent: Alkira Riley!

What’s your background?

I was born and raised on our family dairy farm in Leongatha, South Gippsland.  My parents and my Nana ran the farm growing up, and I was always keen to help whenever I could.

Why did you choose a career in Livestock?

I didn’t intentionally choose a career in Livestock per se, I have always worked in Agricultural roles but never fully understood what the role of a livestock agent was until I immersed myself in it. I had always enjoyed working with Livestock and being outdoors. Because of previous work experiences I have always had a good understanding of animal health and working with large animals.

By chance, a part-time opportunity came up to help out at the local markets for then Landmark, now Nutrien. I took every opportunity possible to pick up more hours until this evolved into a full-time position.

What do you love about your job?

I love helping people, I love seeing clients and their businesses grow and thrive. It gives me great satisfaction, knowing I can offer my support and knowledge to others. I love that I work in a different environment every day and get to see new faces and new places. I enjoy learning about sustainable livestock production and best practices, these guidelines are changing and improving all the time with technology, if I can help one farmer implement change or educate them on something that improves their overall business, even in a small way I get great satisfaction in that.

What advice do you have for people wanting to apply to the Livestock Trainee program?

If you enjoy working with livestock and have good communication skills, give it a go. It’s a rewarding career, and every day brings something new to the table. Keep an open mind and you will never stop learning in this job.

What do you do in your spare time?

I run my own Angus cow and calf operation in my spare time.  And when I have time between being a livestock agent and my own cattle, I enjoy riding my horses around the farm or campdrafting.

Meet James!

What’s your background?

I grew up on the family farm at Durham Ox, a mixed farming operation in northern Victoria, self-replacing merino sheep whilst cropping cereals to coincide with the sheep program. After school, I studied Ag Science at La Trobe in Bundoora.

Why did you choose a career in Livestock? 

I had a keen interest in sheep growing up. Always helping my parents with several jobs around the farm. After deferring Ag Science at Uni I was a bit lost as to what I would do, but settling into a livestock traineeship at Nutrien in late 2018 was the best decision I’ve ever made.

What do you love about your job? 

The diversity is something I’ve always enjoyed about it, no two days are the same. But client satisfaction is definitely the best part of the job, achieving a good result for our clients here in Bendigo is compelling.

What advice do you have for people wanting to apply to the Livestock Trainee program? 

If you have a keen interest in the livestock industry and enjoy working in a team environment, give it a crack! You won’t regret it.

What do you do in your spare time? 

I enjoy playing AFL footy in the winter & fishing/camping in the summer. I also enjoy spending time with family & my mates.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

To be considered for one of the Nutrien Ag Solutions Graduate Program streams, you need to have completed a Diploma, Bachelor degree (or higher qualification) for our Agronomy stream before the start of the program in Ag Science or a related field, and a Bachelors Degree (or higher qualification) for all other Graduate streams in either Agribusiness, Finance, Human Resources, Business Management, Technology, Communications, or any other related business degree. A Day in the Life with Graduate Agronomist

Matthew McCauley

Summer is our busy season here in Southeast QLD so we spend most of our time in the paddock checking crops. Currently, we have been checking predominantly cotton and mung beans with some other soybean, sorghum and peanut crops.
5.45 AM

My alarm goes off and I get up and go for an early morning run or bike ride. Usually for about 45 minutes.

6.45 AM

I get back home, have a shower and start getting ready for the day. I have some Weet-Bix or muesli then pack my lunch and fill my drink bottle, making sure I had enough food and water to last me the day.

7.45 AM

I am lucky enough to live about a 5-minute walk from work and I like to leave with enough time to get to work about 10 minutes early. I have found walking to and from work is a good way to start and finish the day, helping create a good work/life balance.

7.50 AM

When I get to work, the first thing I usually do is make sure the shop is open, gates, and roller doors are open, the lights are on, and the till is full. After this I will sit down and write out a plan for the day and what growers I will check, additionally I will finalise any reports/recommendations leftover from the previous day. Then I sit down with my mentor agronomist and go through the previous day’s crop checks, discuss what crops we will check today and plan out the rest of the week. Because we are working with clients, our schedules often change, we go over the week’s plan every day and sometimes next week’s plan to ensure we cover every client. I often use this time to send away any soil or water tests.

8.30 AM

Depending on the day, I will either be with my mentor agro or I will be by myself. At the start of my grad program, we would always check crops together until I found my feet, learnt more about the crops and earned the trust of my mentor and senior agronomist. Summer is our busy season here in Southeast QLD so we spend most of our time in the paddock checking crops. Currently, we have been checking predominantly cotton and mung beans with some other soybean, sorghum and peanut crops. Ideally, we check cotton once or twice a week and mung beans once a week. This allows us to keep on top of the crop and allow us to make timely decisions if needed.

Checking the crops involves using a tarpaulin sheet, called a beat sheet, and a poll to beat the plant against the sheet to knock any insects out of the plant and onto the sheet. This allows us to identify the insects and count their numbers. I will repeat this multiple times, depending on the paddock size. This allows us to calculate thresholds to determine if it is economically viable to take action.

12.30 PM

Around this time, I will usually pull up for lunch. If I have a full day checking crops I will pull up under a tree or near a creek and eat lunch. If it is a quieter day I may come back to the shop to have lunch and send some crop reports or other emails.

1.00 PM

Typically, I will head back to the shop so I can write up crop reports/recommendations and send them through to the growers. Most of the time I can write all the reports and get them sent by 5.00 pm before I finish for the day. Sometimes, if I have checked lots of crops during the day and haven’t got enough time to get every report written, I may take some time at home after work to get the reports written. Why would I do that after work hours instead of the next morning? What we do as agronomists directly impacts our clients and if a client needs to spray a paddock I would rather they have the report ready for the next day. I have found it also frees up the next morning and leads to a more productive day. After all, I want to do well and develop in my field, so I am willing to put in some extra effort to make it happen.

5.15 PM

I get home from work and will try to do some work around the yard, cook dinner, and unwind from the day by watching some TV or reading a book.

Some other cool things I get to do often as part of my job include travelling to other towns such as Maryborough (30min inland near Fraser Island) and Mundubbera, both 2 hours away from the shop, once a week to check cotton. This is a fantastic opportunity to see how cotton grows in different areas and climatic conditions, such as near the coast. Travelling around also gives me the chance to see other crops grown in these areas such as pineapples and sugar cane.

A Day in the Life with Graduate Accountant

6.00 AM

I’m up, at least I try to get up, takes a few alarms but we get there. Today, I’ll be heading into the office, so I need to get up a little earlier than usual. On days I work from home, I’ll set the alarm a little later.  Get the kettle on, get some breakfast in me, get dressed, double-check I have everything, and I am out.

7.00 AM

I leave and park my car at the station nice and early, ensure my Myki is topped up and head to the platform. Insert my earphones in, listen to my morning playlist or resume listening to an audiobook, whatever mood I’m in.

8.00 AM

I arrive at the office. I head to my desk and unpack my things, getting set up for the day. Catch up with teammates who’ve already arrived or are just coming in, and get some coffee with them at the kiosk downstairs. Since we all also work from home for a part of the week, we like to take the time to catch up whenever we come into the office.

9.00 AM

My brain is fully awake and ready to tackle the day. I revise my to-do list which I always write out the day before. Then go through my emails and flag any that need to be actioned. A few queries to answer and a few meetings to attend. I’ll update my to-do list and prioritize as I go through my emails.

This week we’re forecasting our budgets, so I go through the results that came through the month and compare them to how we performed to budget. Make a note of anything that needs to be followed up on, send out email queries and make calls out to the business to understand any variances that may have come through. This is so that we can get a picture of how our business will be performing in the upcoming year and adjust our forecast accordingly. This is to help me prepare for the upcoming meeting with the budget owners as their business partners.

10.30 AM

Time to get started on the next task: Inventory Analysis reporting. This is a new monthly report requested from the North American office that my team are developing. I’ve collated all the data needed, now it’s about how we want to present it. What can we show with the data? Do we show a split by region? What are the drivers behind trends, inventory volume or price? How detailed should we present the categories? It must be tailored so that it answers management questions and assists them in their decision making. I make some headway with it then go through the prototype report with my manager and teammates. We meet in the Paddock, our communal area and we discuss how we can improve it, which analysis and data would provide better answers. I’m jotting down what needs to be done: need to add a graphic to help visualize results, get additional data from the procurement team on offshore inventory etc.

12.30 PM

It’s lunch time! My team have decided to go out for some lunch. Today we’re going to get some Pho. The walk to the restaurant is a great opportunity to get some fresh air, as we’re located in Docklands there are a few small parks to just sit in and soak in some sunlight and we’re spoiled for choice in terms of food options. Sometimes we visit the nearby DFO during the break to see if there are any good deals and do some lunchtime shopping.

1.30 PM

Time to get stuck back into work. I continue with the Inventory reporting, following up on anything that needed to be done for it. Make some calls to the procurement managers and regional accountants to learn more about how our business is performing and confirming if we need to capture certain information in our Inventory Analysis report. This also gives me the opportunity to catch-up with them and learn more about the process behind certain business activities, it’s important to understand what goes into the numbers so that we can provide more meaningful reporting and analysis. My role allows me to make connections with many experienced and intelligent people who are passionate about their role in the agricultural industry and learn from them.

3.00 PM

It’s time for the meeting with the Corporate Affairs department which I business partner for. I go through the meeting outline with my manager beforehand so that we can effectively discuss what needs to be done. If I don’t know anything, I’ll ask questions. As a graduate, it’s a great learning opportunity, so it’s important that I take the step and ask the question. I have such a supportive team, who help me with all my queries and no question is ever ignored. We discuss with the Corporate Affairs team what they plan to invest in or whether we should adjust the budget for more planned sponsorships/partnerships.

5.00 PM

Work is nearly done for the day. I finalize any edits in reports and forecast workings files and write up my to-do list for the next day, before logging off for the day. Pack up my desk, make sure I don’t forget anything in the office as I’ll be working from home the next day. I quickly head towards the station to catch my train home, which is a convenient 5 min walk from the office.

6.15 PM

I’m home! I give my dog a huge cuddle, then unpack my bags before quickly changing into some trackies and runners to take her out for a nice long walk.

7.15 PM

Time to eat some dinner. Cook some rice, then quickly chop up some veggies and meat, and make a mean stir fry. Switch on the TV and get even hungrier watching Masterchef. Try not to compare my food with the contestants, but one day I’ll perfect my skills.

8.00 PM

Now I’m at my home desk, this time preparing for my CPA exam. I put my earphones in, get into the zone and make some decent progress with my studies. This semester I’m taking Strategic Management Accounting, and my experience in my role has helped me understand concepts much more thoroughly and efficiently.

10.00 PM

Time to unwind before sleep. For me it’s some reading in bed, I’m currently reading The Third Space by Adam Fraser, it helps me learn how to transition mentally and more effectively between the many tasks and roles during the week, such as working from home to working in the office.

10.30 PM

A short reading session later, I set my alarm for tomorrow morning, fluff my pillows, snuggle into my blankets and fall asleep.
