DTP plans, builds and operates an integrated, sustainable and safe transport system for Victorians.
Environmental sustainability is a key priority for DTP, as it is for the Victorian Government. We recognise that the transport network is a public space that contributes to healthy, sustainable and liveable communities.
On 1 July 2019, VicRoads and Public Transport Victoria came together with the Department of Transport to create a properly integrated transport department – in step with other global cities.
The new Department of Transport and Planning gives us a singular, integrated focus on tackling the big issues. The integrated Department of Transport and Planning plans and operates transport in a way that matches the people and products that travel on it – focusing on the destination, rather than which mode we use.
Our integrated approach ensures we are able to:
respond much faster – and give people the information they need – to make the best travel choices, especially around major network disruptions
make better use of existing road and rail, shifting more journeys onto rail and prioritising public transport on roads
respond much quicker to innovation and new transport technologies
take a holistic view in planning for the future, to meet demand for more than 23 million journeys a day and a tripling of freight by 2050
partner with others to address a range of issues, from safety to reducing environmental impacts.
The new Department’s structure reflects the importance of working with the Major Transport Infrastructure Authority. Working together allows us to meet the transport needs of Australia’s fastest-growing state and economy, while managing a record $70-billion investment in infrastructure.

Entry Methods
There are various pathways you can apply for in order to work for DTP:
High School Work Experience is a short-term placement (1-2 weeks) of secondary school students, generally from Year 9 and 10, with employers to provide insights into the industry.
The Vacation Student Program is a pipeline for early career professionals in which university students complete approximately 12 weeks of relevant work experience.
The Youth Employment Scheme (YES) supports young people to undertake a 12-month work placement, in areas including business administration, cyber security and information technology work placement, while studying towards a certificate level qualification in a related field.

YOUTH EMPLOYMENT SCHEME (YES) TRAINEE PROGRAM
This program offers young Victorians aged 15 to 24 opportunities to undertake a traineeship in the Victorian Government. Through a mixture of structured training, provided by a group training organisation and on the job training, trainees will successfully complete certificate level qualifications.
In 2024 the Department of Transport and Planning’s Vacation Student Employment Program will be offered in conjunction with Victorian based Universities, so please reach out to your University Internship team to be referred.
The department’s Vacation Employment Program is a fantastic opportunity for students studying at an Australian university to experience what is like to work in an organisation that delivers a wide range of projects and programs while gaining on-the-job learning and training opportunities. Our Vacation program takes place during your summer university break and commencement dates can be modified to meet individual needs. We try to give preference to students who are currently in their penultimate year of study but welcome applications from second year onwards (depending on the length of their course).

Graduate Programs
VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT GRADUATE PROGRAM
This is a 12-month, whole of Victorian Government development program administered by the Victorian Public Service Commission. Graduates will undertake three rotating placements of four months each and will be eligible for an ongoing position or promotion upon successful completion.
Launching the first year of DoT’s inhouse graduate program focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
With Victoria’s transport and road infrastructure currently expanding, we are looking for the best graduates to keep Victoria’s networks growing and developing.
Our STEM Graduate Program is a 3-year development program consisting of three 12-month rotations across your discipline. This will be the inaugural year of the redesigned program with every graduate’s experience and pathway is tailored to the stream.
The first two years as a graduate you will receive tailored learning and development, mentoring and exposure days across the Victorian transport network. In the third year of the program, our graduates enter their ‘emerging professional’ year and complete an accreditation.
Graduates will undergo a regional rotation to gain valuable hands on experience in a booming area of our business.

Transport is the second-largest source of emissions in Victoria, contributing 25 per cent of the state’s emissions in 2019. As part of Victoria’s Climate Change Strategy, our transport sector pledge lays the foundations for Victoria to transfer to zero emissions transport by 2050. This means continuing the shift to transport powered by clean energy – driving down emissions, sparking new industries and creating jobs.
Innovation
There’s lots of cool stuff happening at DTP, and we’re working on innovative projects, technology and programs that are pushing the boundaries to address climate change and provide low-impact travel choices.
From our new energy-efficient X’Trapolis 2.0 trains to our Next Generation Trams with on-board energy storage to reduce energy use, and our zero emissions bus trial, we’re committed to providing Victorians with more sustainable travel options.
Meet Evelyn
Evelyn, a recent graduate, works in project delivery in DTP’s Rolling Stock Development division, which is responsible for transport services such as metropolitan trains, trams and regional carriages.
Passionate about improving the transport network and infrastructure services, Evelyn says she was extremely interested in pursuing a career in this area.
‘And here I am, making my dream come true! In the future, I’d like to be an expert in my field and continue to serve the community.’
Evelyn never considered being a public servant when she was studying, but she realised this was where she could follow her passion and make a difference to local communities.
‘I had zero experience with the public service before I started so I couldn’t picture what it would be like. I knew it would be different to what I’d done in the past, but I was excited,’ she said.
From her very first week, Evelyn felt genuinely welcomed by the whole team and she continues to feel her contributions are valued.
‘Over time, I saw a culture of respect and a willingness to help each other, which makes everyone feel included. I was surprised by the breadth of support networks. Everyone cares about your personal growth and wellbeing,’ she said.
