Programmed Facility Management would like to congratulate Liam O’Brien for completing his carpentry apprenticeship on Rottnest Island and becoming a full-time employee with Programmed.

Liam is an integral part of the Programmed team, who rely on him to assist in after-hour emergencies and his licensed ability to drive any vehicle on the island. Liam is also the captain of the Island Volunteer Fire Service team and has a reputation for having great potential for career growth.

We caught up with Liam to hear about his progress.

What made you move over to the island?
After high school, I permanently moved onto the island for the great surf, which is a passion of mine. That would be about eight years ago now. Rottnest is now my home, and the community here is my family.

How did you start your apprenticeship with Programmed?
When I arrived, I made many connections with the Programmed team through my hospitality work on the island. I also became quite involved with the Volunteer Fire Service, which is strongly supported by Programmed. Through those connections, I heard about the apprenticeship and successfully applied.

What has your time as an apprentice for Programmed been like?
I’ve been part of the Maintenance team as a carpentry apprentice, and I’ve been fortunate enough to get exposure to all levels of maintenance given the nature of work on the island. My line manager, Colin Trinidad, has shared a wealth of information with me across his experiences, which has been great. Being part of the team has taught me a lot, and I’ve really enjoyed my apprenticeship.

What are your plans now that you have completed your apprenticeship?
I have a young family, so having this opportunity to be a part of Programmed will help set us up for the future. I’m excited about the possibilities and continuing my work in the community.
