Komatsu Apprenticeship Program

Komatsu’s Apprentice Development System (ADS) is a highly innovative and comprehensive approach to apprenticeship training that has set new national standards in the industry. The program has benefited over 715 apprentices and trainees since its inception in 2009 and has earned widespread recognition and accolades, including the 2022 Winner NSW Large Employer of the Year, Silver for 2022 Large Employer of the Year, and Silver for employing Australian Apprentices at the National Training Awards.

The ADS program has demonstrated its effectiveness in preparing apprentices for the industry, with customer-facing individuals trained under the program approximately one year ahead of conventionally trained apprentices. This success can be attributed to the program’s commitment to providing apprentices with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their careers, including technical skills development and life skills necessary for personal growth and success.

The program covers a wide range of areas, including mental health awareness, public speaking, road safety and fatigue management, drug and alcohol awareness, and various business skill sets. In addition to the comprehensive training provided through the ADS program, Komatsu has developed a structured training program to enhance the skills and knowledge of its apprentices.

The ADS system involves roughly 12 weeks of structured training per year, including three weeks of internal ADS training (two weeks technical, one week safety or business skills), eight weeks of TAFE/accredited training, and one week for inductions. To ensure that apprentices remain up-to-date with their training needs, they are required to participate in on-the-job and external training and submit monthly progress reports, which are signed by their immediate supervisors and submitted to their Technical Capability Manager.

Komatsu’s commitment to the training and development of its apprentices is evident through the program’s comprehensive approach to training and development. Fourth-year apprentices receive exposure to career development and planning, where they can establish a well-defined plan in cooperation with their managers outlining their professional aspirations and how to achieve them.

Overall, Komatsu’s ADS program is a trailblazer in the industry, setting new standards for apprenticeship training. With its commitment to developing well-rounded and successful apprentices and trainees, the program is equipping its apprentices with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in their careers and beyond.

Inclusion and Diversity

At Komatsu Australia, we are committed to creating a workplace culture that values and respects the contributions of every individual and the collective organisation.

To achieve this goal, we recognise the need for a sustainable improvement in the inclusion of women, first nations people, and minority groups in leadership positions and on the frontline. Our inclusion and diversity roadmap aims to foster an environment where everyone feels included, respected, and valued, regardless of their background or identity. To achieve this, we will set clear goals and targets, develop accountability mechanisms, and promote a culture of inclusivity that celebrates diversity and promotes equitable opportunities for all. We believe that by embracing diversity and promoting inclusion, we can build a stronger, more innovative, and more resilient organization that reflects the communities we serve.

‘Say Again?’

Komatsu is committed to building an inclusive workplace that values diversity and promotes respectful behaviour. Our internal initiative, called ‘Say Again?’, reinforces this focus by providing a platform for open and constructive conversations that can lead to positive change. Designed to address inappropriate or unconscious comments and behaviour, ‘Say Again?’ encourages individuals to call out such behaviour without being confrontational. This initiative provides an opportunity for every member of the Komatsu network to contribute to a more inclusive culture by challenging harmful behaviours and promoting respect for all. We believe that by embracing this initiative, we can continue to build a workplace culture that values diversity, encourages inclusivity, and fosters collaboration and innovation.

Work 180 Endorsement

We at Komatsu take pride in being endorsed by WORK180, an organization that promotes standards aimed at empowering women in the workplace.
Trusted by millions of women globally, WORK180’s endorsement is a symbol of our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. As an endorsed employer, we are accountable to these standards, and we continuously strive to meet and exceed them. We believe that diversity and inclusion are essential components of our company culture and are critical to our success. We are dedicated to creating a workplace where all employees feel valued, respected, and supported, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, or background. We will continue to work with organizations such as WORK180 to promote gender equality and advance the cause of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

First Nations People

Komatsu Australia has been partnering with the Clontarf Foundation since 2019 to support the education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem, and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women.

This partnership aims to equip them to participate more meaningfully in society.

To strengthen our relationship with Clontarf, we have expanded our support to a national level. We are committed to sharing job advertisements and attending all Clontarf events throughout the year. Moreover, we are working closely with Clontarf on our apprenticeship program to increase the 4% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation rate.

Our commitment to supporting Indigenous communities goes beyond employing Indigenous people in our organization. We want to contribute to Indigenous community programs that help Indigenous people achieve their vocational dreams and support Indigenous entrepreneurs in starting their new ventures. We are willing to invest in these programs without expecting direct benefits, but instead, we measure how our investment is benefiting the communities, organizations, and education institutions we invest in. By doing so, we aim to make a meaningful and lasting impact in the lives of Indigenous people and their communities.

STEM

Komatsu has been a proud partner of the Beacon Foundation for over 15 years, working towards supporting young people to make a successful transition from education to meaningful employment. Our partnership with Beacon Foundation since 2008 has been highly productive, and we have supported their initiatives through financial sponsorship, attendance at career expos and events, safety education, site tours, exhibits of machines at local schools, work experience opportunities, and employment of apprentices and trainees.
Recently, we have expanded our partnership with the Beacon Foundation to include Komatsu’s Student Technology Education Program (STEP). This initiative aims to bring together STEMPunks and local Beacon schools to expose young people to opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). We believe that this program will help young people to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in a rapidly changing technological landscape.
At Komatsu, we are committed to investing in the future of our communities, and we see our partnership with the Beacon Foundation as a key part of this. Through our continued support, we aim to help young people to develop the skills and confidence they need to achieve their potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
